6-year-old Maria Isabel’s family contacted e-NABLE Medellín about building an arm that would alleviate the effects of her disability, a defect that she was born with. Despite living around 8 hours away, on the coast, Maria Isabel and her family were able to make it to Medellín so we could take her measurements and give her the arm. We recognise that funding such travel can be very difficult for a lot of families, and we hope that this is something that e-NABLE will have the resources to cover for future recipients that need it. Our aim is to be able to help children and adults from all over Colombia, not just Antioquia.
Maria Isabel wanted to be a Disney Princess, so we designed the arm according to the colours and style of the film, and even printed a princess tiara to go with her new assistive device. We provided basic training so Maria Isabel could quickly become comfortable and confident with her new arm, whilst playing music from Frozen in the background to sing along to. It was a very special moment that reduced the volunteers present to tears, and one that we hope to recreate again and again.
